Responsible Care®

Many participants in C4 are also members of the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association (CCPA) and as members are committed to Responsible Care.

Responsible Care is a performance improvement initiative first established in 1985. It's aimed, as a recent global status reports states, at continuously improving 'all aspects of the chemical industry's environmental, health and safety performance' and ensuring 'openness in communication about its activities and its achievements'.

On June 14, 2000, the CCPA Board of Directors approved the following new statement that succinctly captures the ethic and principles that underpin Responsible Care as we enter the new century.

The Responsible Care Ethic:

  • We are committed to do the right thing and be seen to do the right thing.
  • We are guided towards environmental, societal, and economic sustainability by the following principles:

    • We are stewards of our products and services during their life cycles in order to protect people and the environment.

    • We are accountable to the public, who have the right to understand the risks and benefits of what we do and to have their input heard.

    • We respect all people.

    • We work together to improve continuously.

    • We work for effective laws and standards, and will meet or exceed them in letter and spirit.

    • We inspire others to commit themselves to the principles of Responsible Care.
