Sustainable
Development, The Precautionary Principle,
and the Chlorine Industry
- "Sustainable Development is globally recognized
as meeting the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Brundtland Definition - World Commission on Environment
and Development, 1987.
- "The chemical industry [of which the chlorine industry
is a part] supports the goal of Sustainable Development.
We will contribute to its progress by fulfilling our primary
role as a vital element of the global economy in a way increasingly
in harmony with the environmental and social as well as
economic interest of the societies in which we operate,
while fulfilling the expectations of our shareholders."
Position Paper on Sustainable Development and the
Chemical Industry, International Council of Chemical Associations,
January, 1996.
- The chlorine industry also supports the RIO definition
of the Precautionary Principle -- "When there are threats
of serious or irreversible damage, a lack of full scientific
certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost
effective measures to prevent environmental degradation."
United Nations Conference on Environment and Development,
Earth Summit, Rio Declaration on Environment and Development,
Rio de Janerio, Brazil, Publ. No. E73.II.A.14, Stockholm:
United Nations, 1992.
